It ended the 19th Century and launched the world into the modern era. Though greater conflicts were still to come in the 20th Century, the First World War set the stage for the world as it is today. By its end the globe had been redrawn, empires had fallen, and war on a terrifying industrial scale, had been unleashed. We’ll look into the world that was, how the Great War ended that world, and how nearly everything we know today comes out of the bloody fighting of 1914-1918 and its immediate aftermath. Wilkinson, a Frederick native, rose to the highest levels of the American military, by betraying everyone he worked for, with, or near. Wilkinson betrayed each of the first four presidents of the United States, worked as a spy for Spain, conspired with Aaron Burr to break the country apart, then betrayed Burr to remain in command of the American army. Wilkinson led the army to its greatest peacetime disaster and commanded a failed invasion of Canada during the War of 1812. He was court-martialed in Frederick and won an acquittal through the efforts of Roger Taney. Note: This course will meet on campus in an in-person environment. The attempt failed, but it produced a new American hero: Benedict Arnold. We'll examine the reasons for the attempt and why it failed. We'll also explore the U.S. military's offensive against Montreal and Quebec and their eventual retreat including, Arnold's march through the Maine wilderness and his counteroffense against the British at Valcour Island. Finally, we'll explore Benjamin Franklin's diplomatic mission to Canada with Maryland delegates and its impact on the movement toward independence.
