Then in 1976, just as a group of dedicated volunteers were beginning to turn things around, a major flood threatened all of their efforts. Learn how visionary leaders, tireless volunteers and dogged determination allowed Downtown Frederick to overcome these challenges to become the award-winning destination it is today. We’ll discuss the origins and expansion of the colony including the impact of religion; the colony’s relationship with enslaved people, Native Americans, and neighboring colonies; and finally, the impact of war on the area. We’ll delve into what public and private education looked like for both boys and girls in Frederick, with particular attention to the African American community of All Saints Street. Additionally, we’ll discuss the significance of one-room schoolhouses and highlight some of the well-known educators from Frederick's past. This seldom-discussed subject includes King George III's government, his Cabinet, administrative departments, and organizational and logistical problems. You'll learn about the Howe brothers and their contradictions in motivation and formal instructions. We'll also discuss the Saratoga campaign and its implications on French, Spanish, Dutch, Russian, and British strategy.
