301.624.2888 ILRFCC.org 35 NEW LIR314 The Star-Spangled Banner Tour of Baltimore 1 session, 8 hours Our adventure begins at the Star-Spangled Banner Flag House, where you’ll step into the home of Mary Pickersgill, the seamstress who crafted the enormous flag that inspired Francis Scott Key to write the national anthem. Immerse yourself in the story of resilience and patriotism during a guided tour that highlights the creation of the flag and its significant role in American history. We’ll then make our way to Little Italy, a charming neighborhood known for its rich Italian heritage. We’ll take a quick walking tour of the neighborhood. Then enjoy a leisurely lunch on your own at one of the authentic Italian restaurants in the area. Finally, we’ll head to Fort McHenry, the birthplace of the Star-Spangled Banner. Here, you’ll walk the grounds of this historic fortification, learn about its pivotal role in the War of 1812, and enjoy stunning views of the harbor. This tour involves moderate walking and standing during the tours including walking on uneven pavement at times. Due to the age of the historic Flag House, some areas are not accessible to individuals with physical disabilities. Note: Transportation will be provided by the FCC Shuttle Bus. We’ll duck in and out of side streets along the walk while we learn the history of former factories such as the Oxe Fiber factory. We will also look at the architecture of the area and discover how the buildings have changed over time. This tour involves walking in downtown Frederick on mostly flat sidewalks and walkways with minor elevation changes for about 1.5 miles moving at a slow pace. Rain Date - 5/17 Note: This tour will be conducted in downtown Frederick. Listening devices will be provided so participants can hear the guide over the noises of downtown.
