Many people came through the area on their way elsewhere. The development of the county was greatly influenced by the roads that carried these people to other parts of the country. New transportation technology and its greater infrastructure, such as the B&O Railroad, impacted Frederick along with the growth of the trolley system and the building of the C&O Canal. We will study the history of Frederick County through the various modes of transportation, their growth, and at times, their decline. Note: Course will meet on campus in an in-person environment. Abraham Lincoln asked this question more than two decades before the Civil War. In this class, Nancy Spannaus, author of Hamilton Versus Wall Street, will focus on the thoughts, policies, and experiences that defined Lincoln’s approach to the nation’s crisis. Special focus will be given to key Lincoln speeches, which students will be encouraged to read and discuss. There’s lots to learn from this Hamiltonian President. It ended the 19th Century and launched the world into the modern era. Though greater conflicts were still to come in the 20th Century, the First World War set the stage for the world as it is today. By its end the globe had been redrawn, empires had fallen, and war on a terrifying industrial scale, had been unleashed. Look into the world that was, how the Great War ended that world, and how nearly everything we know today comes out of the bloody fighting of 1914-1918 and its immediate aftermath.
