The Ohara style focuses on promoting the natural beauty of the flower materials and creating a realistic scene. Through the lessons you will learn about the history, culture, and techniques used in the art form and be able to take your flower materials home with you, giving you a chance to appreciate the beauty of living with flowers. Students will complete three flower arrangements during the course. All supplies are included. Note: Course will meet on campus in an in-person environment. In this course, students will become familiar with the tools and methods of hand lettering while gaining knowledge of basic letter forms through hands-on experience. Learn the tools of the trade, practice basic lettering strokes, and leave with your own finished calligraphy piece at the end of the class. In this class, students will learn how to mix and apply colors, italic style variations, and experiment with different writing tools to create colorful and expressionistic masterpieces. Students taking this course must take Beginner Calligraphy: Italics as a pre-requisite or request permission to register for the course. In this class you’ll learn those stitches along with how to cast on and bind off. Students will make two coasters (or washcloths if you want more practice), one in garter stitch and one in stockinette. They will also learn some basic pattern reading. Students will be required to bring one set of size 7 straight knitting needles and one skein of cotton Sugar and Cream ‘dishcloth’ yarn. While learning to spin we’ll talk about fibers, spinning tools, and some of the history of string and spinning. You’ll have a skein or two of usable yarn by the end of the class. Students will be required to bring a drop spindle and at least four ounces of light colored combed top wool.
