24 ILR 55+ Registration opens Monday, June 5, 2023 Learning on Location LIR220 C&O Canal: History and Nature 2 sessions, 3 hours | 55+ The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, a National Park, is a cherished outdoor spot by cyclists, hikers, and others. This course examines the canal’s history, especially the varied engineering marvels of its time, and as a place of both recreation and natural beauty today. The first session will take place in the classroom and the second session will be a walking tour of a section of the canal. The walk is less than 2 miles with minimal elevation changes along a wellmaintained pathway. Students are to provide their own transportation to the meet up location for the walk. This class will focus on the Monocacy Aqueduct section in Dickerson, Maryland. Rain Date: Wednesday, September 13 Note: This course will meet on campus and on location in an in-person environment. We will explore the history of the AT and the hiking phenomenon it is today. The trail has a fun and quirky culture surrounding it and we will dive into some unique, fun facts. Students are to provide their own transportation to the meet up location. The first session is in the classroom and the second session is a hike to see some iconic sights on this famous footpath. We’ll explore alleys with secrets, a historic cemetery, and view Civil War, retail, and industry history. This tour involves walking in downtown Frederick on mostly flat sidewalks for about 1.5 miles moving at a slow pace. Rain Date: (1) Saturday, September 23; (2) Saturday, October 7 Note: Listening devices will be provided. Students will be required to provide their own transportation to the meeting location. Explore and learn about the maritime history of Baltimore and why it is a significant city for trade. Our morning includes an easy walking tour of the famous former ship building area known as Fell’s Point. Enjoy lunch at the historic and recently renovated Broadway Market. After lunch head back on the bus and catch a glimpse of the port of Baltimore and understand why Baltimore is such a thriving and unique city. We finish the day at the fascinating Baltimore Museum of Industry for an indoor tour of the trades that made the city prosperous, from the oyster canning industry to the garment factories. Tour guide is a native of Baltimore. Fee includes admission to the museum. Lunch is on your own. This bus tour involves moderate walking including areas with cobblestones, possible steps, and moderate standing throughout the day. Note: Transportation will be provided via the FCC Shuttle Bus.
