32 ILR 55+ Registration opens Monday, June 5, 2023 NEW LIR262 The Role of Engineering in Solving Earth’s Big Challenges: Air, Water, Climate and Poverty 4 sessions, 6 hours | 55+ The Earth faces some big challenges including air pollution in many parts of the world, water availability and quality, as well as sanitation issues, climate change and a growing gap between rich and poor populations. Although none of these challenges are likely to be news to anyone, we will examine them in more detail, quantify them and look at some projections for the future. We will specifically address the role of various engineering disciplines in providing solutions, leading us to the concept and academic programs known as Humanitarian Engineering. Note: Course will meet on campus in an in-person environment. The facilitator offers the group writing prompts, participants write for a specific period of time and then share their writing. Group feedback focuses only on what is strong, memorable and working in the piece shared. Participants have the option to choose an alternate topic if the prompt offered does not appeal. The AWA method requires deep listening and the ability to enter the writer’s world. Note: Course will meet on campus in an in-person environment. FREE Summer/Fall Courses ILR969 Advance Care Planning: Your Life, Your Plan 1 session, 2 hours | 55+ Advance Care Planning is making decisions about the type of care you would like if you are ever unable to speak for yourself. This course provides information and answers questions about how to make a deliberate plan to think about and complete your advance care planning decisions, sharing those decisions with those who will be in the position of making determinations for you, explaining what’s important to you and why, and initiating this decisionmaking conversation with your parents or other family members/friends for whom you may be the one making the determinations. It also introduces the Frederick Health Advance Care Planning Initiative. It always seems too early, until it’s too late. Do it for yourself and your family. Note: Course will meet on campus, in-person. Instructor: Sharon Smith 5-Digit Number: 25476 | Wed, 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., 8/9 Location: Braddock Hall/B102 This course is made possible by a generous donation from the Shirley Cruickshank Wolfe Fund.
