Each section will include both credit and noncredit students. The expectations for attendance, participation, and effort are the same for all students. Karen was born on August 13, 1941, in Big Valley, Alberta, Canada and was raised in Spokane, Washington. She received degrees from Whitworth University, Harvard Divinity School, and the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. She worked at the National Symphony Orchestra and the Smithsonian Institution’s Associates Program, developing educational tours. Her relationship with the C&O Canal began when she hiked on the towpath. She then studied the canal’s history and engineering and upon retiring she started volunteering for the C&O Canal National Historical Park’s headquarters library. Karen also taught lifelong-learning classes at Hagerstown and Frederick community colleges. Her history, literature, and philosophy classes were loved by students and reflected her own continuing intensive study in these areas.
