He’ll walk you through the role of the rhythm section, the approaches songwriters and improvisers use when they write and perform melodies, and he’ll show you how the different parts of bands all interact together. Finally, you’ll put your listening skills to work in the final day of class, when Howard will be joined by fellow jazz artists to give you an educational performance in action. Listen to and discuss extraordinary musical talent that is just a click away. This course is designed by an enthusiast as a way to expose participants to various genres such as acapella groups, classical talent, and jazz. Music history and theory will not be the focus. Throughout the classical, romantic, and post-romantic eras, composers have explored and exploited the symphonic form to create some of history’s most beautiful music. In this course we will listen to and talk about symphonies by several composers including Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Mahler, and Shostakovich.
