These trials have been described as our “national crackup” enroute to the US Constitution (Stacy Shiff, The Witches: Salem, 1992, 2015). It is one of the few seminal events in which females play the central role. The roles played by religion and Puritanism, economics, culture, and war as possible background causes to the trials will be explored, as well as the advantages that witchcraft offers to a society. Experience the mysteries of the late-Neolithic Standing Stones at Callanish (where Claire in the TV series “Outlander” travels back in time) and peer into the turfroofed “black houses” of early settlers. Wilkinson, a Frederick native, rose to the highest levels of the American military, by betraying everyone he worked for, with, or near. Wilkinson betrayed each of the first four presidents of the United States, worked as a spy for Spain, conspired with Aaron Burr to break the country apart, then betrayed Burr to remain in command of the American army. Wilkinson led the army to its greatest peacetime disaster and commanded a failed invasion of Canada during the War of 1812. He was court-martialed in Frederick and won an acquittal through the efforts of Roger Taney. Note: Course will meet on campus in an in-person environment. Along with the events that shaped the colony and later the state, the course will explore social issues such as religion, the role of women, slavery, and the English’s relationship with Native Americans. It will also discuss the relationship between Maryland and its neighbors Virginia and Pennsylvania. The history of the Frederick County region will be highlighted in the course.
