22 ILR 55+ Registration opens December 5, 2022 Learning on Location NEW LIR182 Intriguing, Unusual, and Interesting Tales of Downtown Frederick Walking Tour: Trains, Trolleys, and Automobiles 1 session, 1.5 hours | 55+ In this easy walking tour, we will explore the history of transportation in the downtown Frederick area. Learn about Abraham Lincoln’s train visit and the importance of the railroad industry. We’ll stop by the exteriors of former sites that reflect the automobile industry and trolley system and listen to stories about the locations. Learn what the horse and carriage meant to the area including its use for travel, tanneries, and Civil War hospitals. Facts about local history will be discussed as we stroll among the houses and buildings. This tour involves walking in downtown Frederick on mostly flat sidewalks for about 1.5 miles moving at a slow pace. Note: This tour will be conducted in downtown Frederick. Listening devices will be provided so participants can hear the guide over the noises of downtown. Students will be required to provide their own transportation to the meeting location. Learn about historic buildings, former businesses and trades including tanneries, the flood and restoration project, and the famous Trompe-l’œil bridge. We’ll also walk along All Saints Street where we will explore African American history, see historic homes, and learn about important members of the community. This course examines the canal’s history, especially the varied engineering marvels of its time, and as a place of both recreation and natural beauty today. The first session will take place in the classroom and the second session will be a walking tour of a section of the canal. The walk is less than 2 miles with minimal elevation changes along a well-maintained pathway. Students are to provide their own transportation to the meet up location for the walk.
