A LETTER FROM THE ILR PROGRAM MANAGER

         Dear Lifelong Learners,

“Nurture your great spirit for a great self.”

Those words from inspirational writer Lailah Gifty Akita speak to the importance
of encouraging developmental growth within ourselves. When we take time to
nurture our spirit, we improve ourselves in countless ways. We learn, we gain
happiness, and we expand our knowledge through new experiences.

This spring, the Institute for Learning in Retirement (ILR) at FCC has a long list of
courses and opportunities to help you nurture your spirit.

There are many health and wellness courses to choose from including
“Mindfulness Made Easy – Stress and Pain Management,” taught by Nanette
Tummers, and “Optimal Aging: Improving Memory with Brain Training,” led by
Terry Leitma – both new this spring.

There are also opportunities to awaken or nurture your love of the arts. Featured instructor Vivian “Lynn” Fleming
will look at the history of Broadway musicals and the famed Theater District in New York City during her course,
“On Broadway!” Her other course, “Three Men and a Woman – 20th Century American Composer,” will examine
modern-day equivalents to great composers such as Mozart and Beethoven.

You’ll also have the chance to get to know the Frederick Symphony Orchestra in a unique way through David Howard’s
course. Participants will listen to recorded music as well as live demonstrations, and learn about the composers.

Traveling and exploring is a great way to nurture your sense of adventure and wonderment. Marcy Gouge and Kathy
Barylski are leading three different travel planning courses that will give you tips on things like traveling solo, packing
light, or planning your perfect summer vacation.

You can also take advantage of our popular Learning on Location trips. This spring, we’ll lead groups on exciting trips
to Old Town Alexandria, Antietam, and the countryside of the Shenandoah Valley in and around Winchester, VA. Or, you
can stay right here in Frederick County and experience our local geologic history with Chris Haugh, our resident award-
         winning researcher and documentarian.

However you spend your spring, we hope you find the time and energy to “nurture your great spirit for a great self.”
Let ILR and our wonderful instructors help you do just that.

                                                              Sincerely,
