Search and Seizure –

The 4th Amendment

This course considers the underlying reason for the adoption of the

4th Amendment premise of an inalienable right of citizens to be

protected from unreasonable searches and seizures and its reliance

on probable cause and warrants. In this course, we’ll trace together

the adaptations that have been fashioned to continue those

protections from changes in technology.

People – The 9th Amendment

This course considers the underlying reasons for the adoption of

the 9th Amendment. The premise of the 9th Amendment is that

after a grant of power to the National Government certain powers

are reserved for the States. All other rights of the citizens are

retained by the citizens and not delegated to a governmental unit.

James Baer

Jim Baer’s former students at Ursinus College called him“intelligent, motivating, friendly,

funny, experienced,” and said he was, “the best teacher ever hired.” A graduate of The

University of Virginia School of Law, Jim has been a member of the Maryland Bar since

1969 and was also a member of the Bar of the District of Columbia and the Bar of the

Supreme Court of the United States of America. He was a trial lawyer in private practice

until 2001 when he returned to his alma mater, Ursinus College, where he created the

college’s Center for Legal Studies and taught a variety of courses utilizing a unique blend

of Socratic Method and open class discussion.
