Introducing Erik Anderson…
ILR 588 Medieval Literature & Culture:
England from the 800s through
the 1300s
3 sessions, 6 hours
This course will explore the literature of Old English and Middle
English including the cultural, technological, historical, and
economic forces that shaped early English literature and paved
the way for modern English. While the English language today
holds a prominent place on the world stage, it had humble and
uncertain beginnings. This course will unpack the developments
that caused the language to be rejected by England’s own kings
for centuries and the forces that eventually led English to the
pen of William Shakespeare. Along the way we will work past
the linguistic and cultural barriers that keep modern English
speakers from fully appreciating the foundational medieval texts
of their language.
Instructor:
Erik Anderson has a Bachelor of Arts in English
from Bucknell University and a Master of Arts in Medieval
Literature & Culture from the University of Dublin. He has
previously taught English 101 at Frederick Community College.
