ILR837 Personal Self Defensive Tactics
1 session, 3 hours
Rape/robbery/assault is not a selective crime, it has no regard
for age, race, or social status. In this class, you will learn basic
common sense rules that can be used to protect yourself before,
during, and after an attack. Research shows that educated
citizens are best equipped to protect themselves. The class has
been described by some students as “an insurance policy you
never want to have to use but which is comforting to have.” The
class is designed for all ages and is strictly classroom based; this is
not a physical class.
Instructor:
Captain Kirby Lee Maybush retired form
the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office with 45 years of law
enforcement. He has taught self-defense/defensive tactics at
police, sheriff, and correction academies and to military police
and numerous organizations in the area. He has been on TV and
radio in reference to the classes. Several women after attending
CPT Maybush’s classes stated not only were they able to prevent
a sexual/physical assault it also increased their self-esteem and
self-confidence, improved their personal lives, family ties, and
work relationships.

Introducing Jennifer Littleton…
ILR583 Foundations OfWatercolor
6 sessions, 15 hours
Have you always enjoyed the appearance of a realistic
transparent watercolor but wondered how to achieve it? In
this course students will learn through a systematic process
how to execute a detailed line drawing, transfer it to the
watercolor paper, and practice flat washes with round and flat
brushes. In addition, students will learn through discussion
and demonstration how to create tints, complementary colors,
and the use of color theory. Students can anticipate utilizing
numerous practice sheets to gain mastery of techniques to render
one monochromatic and one full color painting. A supply list will
be given to the students during the first class. Students will be
inspired and revitalized by attending.
Instructor:
Jennifer Littleton is a graduate of the Maryland
Institute College of Art. She exhibits and has won awards at
International competitions. She has taught watercolor workshops
throughout the United States including the San Diego Watercolor
Society, Hilton Head Art League, and Rhode Island Watercolor
Society. Ms. Littleton is a Signature member of the Baltimore
Watercolor Society and she founded the Littleton School of Art
in Towson, MD. She has exhibited with the American Watercolor
Society and the National Watercolor Society. Ms. Littleton
teaches in a “realistic watercolor” style.

ILR554 Genealogy Basics:
A Deeper Appreciation
4 sessions, 8 hours
This course will cover the in depth basic records that all
genealogists should investigate as cornerstones of their life-time
of research. Learn how to best utilize the census, vital records,
newspapers, and published histories. You’ll look deeply at on-
line resources, and also discuss the “real” places that should be
visited and why.
Instructor:
Mary Mannix is currently the Maryland
Room Manager of the C. Burr Artz Public Library of the
Frederick County Public Libraries. She is very active in
MARAC (the Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference).
She has been involved in the History Section of RUSA and
was the 2011 winner of the Genealogical Publishing Company
Award. In 2015, she was given the Martha Washington
Medal from the Sergeant Lawrence Everhart Chapter of
the Maryland Society of Sons of the American Revolution.
She has taught genealogy librarianship at the University of
Maryland and public history courses at Hood College.

ILR560 The Secrets of the C&O Canal

The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal runs along the Potomac
River from Cumberland, Md., to Georgetown in the District of
Columbia. It is a 184 mile-long engineering marvel that has 11
aqueducts, 86 locks, and one tunnel. It’s history spans the 19th
century and is filled with mishaps, crimes, secrets, and drama.
Learn the stories of the people and locations on the C&O Canal
including it’s connection with the creation of U.S. Constitution,
the solution to a legendary murder on the canal that happened
far differently than we are told, and the connection between the
canal and the JFK assassination.
Instructor:
Jim Rada has written many works of historical
fiction and non-fiction history, including three novels about the
C&O Canal. He has also written a number of articles about the
history of and events on the canal. Jim is a full-time freelance
writer who has received numerous awards from the Maryland-
Delaware-DC Press Association, Associated Press, Maryland State
Teachers Association, Society of Professional Journalists, and
Community Newspapers Holdings, Inc. for newspaper writing.
