ILR562 Rasta and Reggae: Jamaican
History and Caribbean Culture
Global Learning Offering

In this course, students will gain an understanding of Jamaican
history, with special emphasis on the complex ways in which
Rastafarian philosophy and reggae music influences the
Caribbean region and African Diaspora. The course will include
films, music, images, and anthropological case studies to further
your understanding of Caribbean culture.
Instructor:
Ivy Chevers, PhD is an Assistant Professor at FCC.
She received her degree from the Ohio State University where
her dissertation was “Rasta and Reggae: A Study of Rastafarian
Culture in Columbus, Ohio.” Ivy is a former Peace Corps Volunteer.
She spent five years in Kingston, Jamaica as a volunteer. She spent
an additional thirteen years in Jamaica, teaching arts and crafts at
a high school in the rural parish of St. Ann.

Learn the basics of floral design by discussing art concepts,
viewing examples, and using hands on experience to create
cheerful arrangements of either fresh, dried, or artificial flowers.
This course is for beginners or as a continuation for those who
took other floral design offerings. Each offering will feature a
different design. Supplies are included in your course cost.

ILR424 Democracy in America Forum
5 sessions, 10 hours
This interactive lecture and discussion forum examines aspects
of democracy in contemporary American society. We’ll examine
constitutional principles in the light of such issues as equality,
diversity, immigration, terrorism, partisanship, political
ideologies, education, interpreting history, science and critical
thinking, health care, the social safety net, civic responsibility,
and the future of American democracy. We will review the
statistics, present a breadth of viewpoints, and discuss ways to
educate the public about civic involvement.
Instructor:
Julie Castillo is a college anthropology
instructor, children’s enrichment instructor, writing instructor,
enrichment curriculum designer, entrepreneur, writer, and
futurist. She holds an MA in sociocultural anthropology from
Catholic University with a specialty in gender studies and
ethnopsychology. Her current interests include development
anthropology, human ecology, and poverty and affluence. She
is fascinated by concepts of self and identity and frequently
taps into literature, film, philosophy, and psychology in order to
enhance her understanding. She loves books, movies, wildlife,
adventure travel, and kayaking.
