ILR838 Principles of U.S. National Security

National security issues are a hot topic these days. This course
is a basic introduction to the theory and practice of national
security policy by the United States in the 21st century setting,
drawing upon real-world situations that are widely discussed
in the national media. The course will be comprised of the
following topics: 1. Principles of national security including neo-
conservative, humanitarian interventionist, neo-isolationist,
and some historical American national security policies. 2. The
role of the military in U.S. national security policy including
NATO and Constitutional provisions of how the United States
government “goes to war.” 3. The role of diplomacy in national
security policy versus the use of military power. 4. The role of
economic policy in shaping U.S. national security policy.

ILR670 The Ultimate Mobile Device:
Meditation and Mindfulness
5 sessions, 7.5 hours
It has been said that “Meditation is the ultimate mobile
device; you can use it anywhere, anytime, unobtrusively.”
This course will be an introduction to meditation or a
refresher course for those acquainted with meditation and
mindfulness. The teaching motif will be didactic, experiential,
and reflective and include opportunities for group discussion
and sharing. The sessions will enable participants to be
more centered through a greater sense of self-awareness,
relaxation, self-acceptance, compassion and healing through
an exposure to a variety of meditative techniques.
Instructor:
With a background in higher education, Larry
Neumark holds a B.A. (History major, Sociology minor), a
Master’s in Theology and a Master’s in Counseling Psychology.
A longtime contemplative person, seeker and student of life,
he believes that the exploration, experience and practice of
meditation and mindfulness can lead to greater self-awareness,
compassion for others, and peace.

ILR852 Survey of French History
6 sessions, 12 hours
From the prehistoric caves of Lascaux to the opulence of
Versailles, this course offers a survey of French history across
several thousand years. Students will interpret various written
texts and works of art pertaining to French history. Significant
political, social events, and institutions that have affected French
history will be examined.
Instructor:
Dr. Lois Jarman has been a world language
educator for more than seventeen years. She has taught English,
French, Spanish, and Latin on a secondary and post-secondary
level. Lois received her doctoral degree in second language
acquisition and currently is the Director of the Intensive English
Language Program at Shepherd University. Lois has been a
Frederick Memorial Hospital Auxiliary member and volunteer
for more than seventeen years. She is a mentor with Woman
to Woman Mentoring and is pleased to be a member of the
Frederick County Commission for Women. Lois has been a
resident of Frederick County more than thirty years.
