SEN491 WritingYour Life Story: Tales for the
Grandchildren
7 sessions, 14 hours
ILR’s longest running course returns! Weekly handouts and
discussion guide you in writing your family history, recording
its unique culture, folklore, and values for future generations.
By preserving both personal and family stories, you can provide
a good sense of self-identification and belonging to those who
come after you. Whether you are a beginning or experienced
writer, you will benefit from class discussions as you write at least
seven stories during the seven sessions of the class. Course is
limited to 12 participants, so register early.
Instructor:
Dottie O’Neal was hand-picked by the creator
and long-time teacher of this course, Shirley Sandage, as the
facilitator of one of ILR’s most popular courses. She was a student
of Shirley’s in this course for many years and continues to write
her own life story.

ILR323 Due Process, Privileges or
Immunities and State Action: The
Fourteenth Amendment and Beyond
6 sessions, 9 hours
Consider the uniquely American approach to State Action as it
applies to the obligations of the several states to provide certain
privileges and immunities and due process to their citizens.
These rights are conferred on the citizenry by the Fourteenth
Amendment which provides “No state shall make or enforce any
law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens
of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person
of life, liberty, or property without due process of law…”. We
will consider the historical, sociological and political reason
surrounding the adoption of the amendment and its application
over time. We will consider The State Action Doctrine, The
Privileges or Immunities Clause and substantive Due Process in
matters including the right to marry, family integrity, rearing
of children, birth control, abortion, sexual autonomy, marriage
equality, assisted suicide, education, and welfare.
Instructor:
Jim Baer’s former students at Ursinus College
called him “intelligent, motivating, friendly, very funny, very
experienced,” and said he was, “the best teacher ever hired.”
A graduate of The University of Virginia School of Law, Jim is
a forty-five-year member of the Maryland Bar and was also a
member of the Bar of the District of Columbia and the Bar of
the Supreme Court of the United States of America. He was a
trial lawyer in private practice until 2001 when he returned to
his alma mater, Ursinus College, where he created the college’s
Center for Legal Studies and taught a variety of courses utilizing
a unique blend of Socratic Method and open class discussion.
