ILR841 Eight Nations Vital to
Sub-Sahara Africa: Past & Present
7 sessions, 14 hours
Learn about the important histories of eight African nations
that helped shape the sub-Sahara continent including; Ghana,
Nigeria, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Democratic Republic of the
Congo, Zimbabwe and South Africa, from slavery to the present.
Students will learn how their unique history is reflected in the
current political-economic life of these nations.
Instructor:
Lawrence Freeman has been involved in Africa
for almost 25 years and has made over two dozen visits to the
nations of Sudan, Nigeria, Mali, Chad, and Ethiopia. He has
studied the history and political economy of several Africa
nations. Lawrence has attended weekly seminars and forums
on Africa in Washington, DC including Congressional hearings
on Africa. As a result, Lawrence has attained an in-depth
knowledge of both historical and current developments of
Africa. He has written dozens of articles analyzing the political
economies of African nations including Sudan, South Sudan,
Nigeria, Kenya, Mali, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, and the Democratic
Republic of the Congo. He specializes in promoting policies for
physical economic development, and has presented his ideas to
government and non-government circles alike in both Africa and
the United States.

ILR424 Democracy in America Forum
5 sessions, 10 hours
This interactive lecture and discussion forum examines aspects
of democracy in contemporary American society. We’ll examine
constitutional principles in the light of such issues as equality,
diversity, immigration, terrorism, partisanship, political
ideologies, education, interpreting history, science and critical
thinking, health care, the social safety net, civic responsibility,
and the future of American democracy. We will review the
statistics, present a breadth of viewpoints, and discuss ways to
educate the public about civic involvement.
Instructor:
Julie Castillo is a college anthropology
instructor, children’s enrichment instructor, writing instructor,
enrichment curriculum designer, entrepreneur, writer, and
futurist. She holds an MA in Sociocultural Anthropology from
Catholic University with a specialty in gender studies and
ethnopsychology. Her current interests include development
anthropology, human ecology, and poverty and affluence. She
is fascinated by concepts of self and identity and frequently
taps into literature, film, philosophy, and psychology in order to
enhance her understanding. She loves books, movies, wildlife,
adventure travel, and kayaking.

ILR850 On GossamerWings:
The Magic of Butterflies and Moths
3 sessions, 6 hours
With at least 70 species of butterflies and over a 1,000 species
of moths in Frederick County, we have much to explore! This
introduction course will include classroom time to study
lifecycles, anatomy, nomenclature and identification, and time
outdoors (weather providing) to apply that knowledge.
Instructor:
Kathy Barylski is a leading butterfly researcher
in the state and has a passion for spreading the love of
butterflies. She coordinates annual butterfly counts in Frederick
County, teaches classes about butterflies, and participates in
research projects for Maryland and with other lepidopterists.
She is the owner and founder of Incite Ecology, a business
launched to help ignite people’s passion for the environment.
